The SJS Mavericks Girls’ Volleyball team faced the Episcopal Knights on Thursday in an away game. The teams met previously with the Mavericks winning easily in 3, but this counter match forced the Mavs to play without Captain and Libero Angela Ha who leads the Maverick defense.
Even though this match kept a tighter point spread, the Mavs maintained control of the lead in all three sets. Meryl Gibbs, Alex Beckham and Caroline Labanowski stepped up to fill the defensive void and fed a strong offense with good serve receive passing to Avery Landrum who filled the setter role in the match. Jane Labanowski led in kills by recording 13 kills in the match, plus 2 block kills and had no errors in the match. Other players with strong offense included Alex Beckham with 9 kills, Caroline Labanowski with 7, Meryl Gibbs with 6, and Anna Cain with 2. Meryl Gibbs had two extended service streaks in the match and the only service ace of the night. This gives the Mav’s their 4th counter win with 3 more counter matches to go before SPC Championships in November.
