On the eve of the PSAT exam and with three team members out sick, the SJS Maverick Girls’ Volleyball team faced the Houston Christian Youth Association Varsity team, a home-schooled team. With a new line-up that fielded all available players, the Mavericks started strong and took the first set of the match 25-10. Then with a string of unforced errors, the Mavericks allowed their opponents to gain some momentum, although the Mavericks remained in control of the lead throughout the second set which finished 25-20. Maverick ball-handling was uneven in the third set, allowing the HCYA team to take the lead early, but the Mavericks battled back to seize the lead and hold onto it to finish the match with a 25-17 win.
Setter for the match was Kate Bres and Jane and Caroline Labanowski and Meryl Gibbs all worked the whole court today. Angela Ha was stellar at Libero. Stephanie Guo stepped up and played like she was 8 ft. tall when she nailed a kill on the 10 ft. line from the outside and logged many digs on the back row. Anna Cain, Meredith George, and Courtenay Buass all had rotations in the match to round out the roster and help the Mavericks record their 11th consecutive win. The Mavericks wish our starters Alex Beckham and Avery Landrum a speedy recovery. Alia Nazir continues to recover from her back injury.
