Hempstead Game

The Mavericks meet the Bobcats from Hempstead for the first time at Skip Lee Field. SJS wins the toss and elects to receive. Starting at their own 34 the Mavericks strike quick going 66 yards in 5 plays capped by a 50 yard run by Josh Winslow for the TD. Dan Tweardy tacks on the extra point for a Maverick lead of 7-0 with 9:27 in the first quarter. After Tweardy's kickoff the defense takes the field and after giving up one first down the Mavericks force a punt. Taking the ball over on the 15 the Mavs proceeded to move the ball out to the 41 but loss possession on a fumble. But on the next play Jack Craddock stepped in front of a pass for the interception giving the ball back to the Mavericks on the 45. Not able to get anything going for a first Jack Waller had to come in and punt. The Bobcats had a hard time catching the punt and Tim Otey was able to pounce on the ball giving possession back to St. John's. The Mavericks waisted no time in taking advantage of the turnover going 45 yards in four plays with Stephen Firestone taking it in from the 4 for the score. Tweardy again with the point after and the Mavs are up 14-0 with 2:19 in the first. The defense held once again forcing another punt with Ben Griffin getting a great return. The offense facing a fourth and 4 called on Tweardy to come in for the field goal try which was blocked by the Bobcats. Fortunately Hempstead was not able to capitalize due to the stout play of the SJS defense and had to punt the ball back to the Mavericks who took over at their own 32. The offense facing a fourth and 12 called up a fake punt in which Chris Gow hit Tim Otey on a pass to keep the drive alive. Josh Winslow then put the ball in the end zone with a run of 23 yards for the TD. A miss on the point after and the score now stands at 20-0 going into halftime.
The second half starts with great coverage by the SJS kickoff team making the Bobcats start at their own 7 yard line. Making a few first downs and driving out to 37 the Maverick D tightened up and forced another punt with fourth and six on the 37. Caldwell Flores and Stephen Firestone went to work gaining good yardage to set up Winslow with a 22 yard run for a score and the Mavs leading 27-0 with 5:42 in the third. On the ensueing kickoff Chris Gow was able to recover a fumble giving the ball back to the Mavericks. Unable to muster up a first the Mavs were forced to punt. The Bobcats were then able to make good on a fourth and one at the 49 to keep their drive alive then running a double reverse pass for a 50 yard TD put them on the scorboard behind 27-7. But that was all they could get as the Maverick defense keep them in check the rest of the game while the offense was able to put up another score with Flores taking it in from the one after an 8 play 65 yard drive to make the final tally 33-7.
