The Mavericks played their most consistent game of the year with the offense scoring in each quarter and the defense posting a shut out vs. the Episcopal Knights. The Mavericks received the opening kickoff and Cameron Neal with a great return out to the 40. The offense put together a 6 play drive going 60 yards with Caldwell Flores finishing it off with a 17 yard run to pay dirt. Dan Tweardy with the PAT and the Mavs are up 7-0 with 9:15 in the first quarter. Tweardy then puts the ensueing kickoff out of the endzone for the touchback and the Knights start their first possession own their 20. Running 16 plays that included a succesful fourth down conversion the Knights found themselves facing another fourth down at the Maverick 28. Unable to convert the Mavs took over for their second possession. The offense took over where they left off and moved the ball to the EHS 39 but stalled looking at a fourth a nine and punted the ball back to the Knights. The defense then came in a handed the Knights the first of five three and outs to end the first quarter. The second quarter was back and forth with the Maverick defense forcing another three out. Ben Griffin with a punt return to the Knight 36 set up the Mavericks second score with Stephen Firestone busting up the middle on a 25 yard scamper to make the haltime score in favor of the Mavericks 14-0. The SJS defense started the second half with another three and out and the offense took over at their own 10 yard line after the EHS punt. On the second play Josh Winslow went the distance with an 85 yard touchdown run and the Mavericks increased their lead to 21-0. The rest of the third quarter the defense kept the Knights in check with Will Wallace and Chris Gow coming up with interceptions. The fourth quarter started the way the third finished with Tim Otey getting a pick making a great return and giving the offense the ball on the Episcopal 26. On the sixth play of the possession Caldwell Flores took the ball across the goal line for a nine yard score and 28-0 on the scoreboard with 7:44 in the fourth. The defense sealed the shutout forcing two more three and outs on the Knights next two possessions!
