The Maverick Girls’ Varsity Volleyball players were pumped to face local rival Kinkaid at home in their final counter match before the SPC Championships. At stake was seeding in the SPC tournament as their Division 1 status was already secure.
The first set was a see-saw with Kinkaid matching points with the Mavs until the Mavs decided to finish it 25-21. Then the Mavs stepped up the pace and took the second set easily with a dominating 25-7 win. In the third set, Kinkaid battled back but could not secure the lead and the Mavs won 25-17.
Still playing without two starters, the Mavs showed that they were capable of mounting a balanced attack. Combining the count of hitting kills and blocking kills, Jane Labanowski and Meryl Gibbs tied with 9 each in the match. Close behind were Alex Beckham and Caroline Labanowski with 7 each. Other significant kills were recorded by Anna Cain with a season high 4 kills in the match, and Avery Landrum with 3 kills. Caroline led in service aces for the match with 3. Defense for the Mavs was strong and the void left by injured libero Angela Ha was covered by Alex Beckham, Meryl Gibbs, the Labanowski sisters, with support from Stephanie Guo, Kate Bres, Courtenay Buass and Meredith George.
The Mavericks will now scrimmage local teams to prepare for SPC competition with the final SPC seeding to be determined by other teams playing in counter matches this week.
