10 to Win

Sam Chambers
Surviving mosquito swarms, 10 penalties, and a pesky Mustang squad, St. John's found themselves in the thick of things inside the livable forest of Kingwood High School rallying with 10 goals, and 10 saves.
The Mavericks shook off the road trip and a welcoming squad of mosquitoes at Kingwood High School to jump out to a quick lead from Michael Cregan's '13 opening shot.

Unlike previous opponents, Kingwood answered after each score.  Carl Bernicker '14 found David Edwards '13 for a 2-1 lead and the Mustangs rallied again.  Paul Loya '13, Edwards/Douglas Berkman '12, Cade Shanks '14/Berkman gave the Mavericks a 5-4 advantage only to be tied up seconds later.   Bernicker made it 6-5 St. John's at the break to set up a run in the second half.

Just minutes into the 3rd period William Griffin '13 found a Chris Gow '12 assist for a 2 goal cushion followed by an Edwards score from Berkman to put the Mavericks up by 3.

With 8:16 to go in the period St. John's was slapped for 7 consecutive penalties turning off the offense for the next 13 minutes.

For the next 10 minutes Kingwood sprayed the Mavericks to take their first lead 9-8 with 10:21 to go in the game.   The Mustangs were set to take control with their 10th extra man opportunity, but St. John's pulled out a trusty can of repellent: Nate Whittle '12.

Whittle made two of his 10 saves in the 4th quarter and St. John's went flag free to tie it up on an Edwards/Berkman score at the 5:17 mark.  Bernicker put in the 10th goal with 4:04 on the clock and the Mavericks beat the buzzer to survive another THSLL counter.

Logan Smith '13
and Gow led the team with 8 total gb's.

St. John's hosts another herd of Mustangs (Memorial High School) on Friday 5:00 p.m. Caven Field.
