Mavericks flush out club from Las Vegas after dicey first half of play.
St. John's took an early lead within the first minute of play by Paul Loya '13/ Chris Gow '12, only to be dealt two consecutive scores from visiting Palo Verde, just off the plane from Las Vegas, Nevada.
Douglas Berkman '12 tied it up, but the Panthers rolled in two more for a 4-2 early second quarter lead. Jonathan Newar '13 made it 3-4 minutes later and PV answered to go up 5-3, before Will Griffin '13 cut it to a 1 goal margin at the half.
Behind a stout close defense (Jack Craddock '12, Ben Griffin '13, Thomas Dawson '14, Jake Horowitz '13 and solid goalie play from Scott Hereford '13 and William Trieschman '14, St. John's shut out Palo Verde for the remaining 23 minutes and 59 seconds of the game. Including Griffin's goal, the Mavericks cashed in 6 unanswered scores: David Edwards '13 tied it up at the 10:53 mark in the 3rd, and Griffin got the game winner midway in the period. Carl Bernicker '14 scored 2 consecutive goals, 1 assited by Gow, and Newar hit Berkman for 9-4 3rd quarter lead.
Gow made his third assist on the night to give Griffin the final score and a hat trick for the Mavericks. Smith and Berkman led the team (37) in ground balls with 6 each. Nate Whittle '12 has 5 first half saves followed by 3 from Hereford (2) and Trieschman (1) combined.
