St. John's one more's Strake Jesuit for a key THSLL victory under the lights of Scotty Caven Field.
As Venus and Jupiter shown bright in the western sky, the Mavericks were equally as glowing down the stretch in a thrilling TSHLL victory over the Crusaders.
Touting one of the toughest defenses in the state, Strake came into the game on a 6 game winning streak, but the Mavericks had plenty of D star power led by a game high 8 gb performance from LSM Logan Smith '13. Nate Whittle '12 led the close defense with 9 saves including 4 in the last quarter.
Ben Griffin '13, Jack Craddock '12, Thomas Dawson '14 along with the man down unit of Eric Hobby '13, and William Trieschman '14 kept Strake in check at crucial points of the game to give the offense a finger nail edge as the game wobbled back and forth.
With the sun in their eyes, Strake took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Erik Rowley. The Mavericks rebounded in the second period on a Carl Bernicker '14 score with 8:20 on the clock. Chris Gow '12 tied it up minutes later and it was 2-2 at the break.
Midway through the third period, St. John's took the momentum on a Grayson Crady '13 score from Michael Cregan '13 for St. John's first lead in the game.
Strake answered in the fourth quarter with back to back goals (Chris Welsh) to retake the lead (4-3) with 8:35 to go, but with 6:44 remaining, Gow found Cade Shanks '14 for the tying score.
Both teams had scoring chances down the stretch, but saves by goalies Clarke Bullington of Strake (15) and Whittle (9) kept the ball out of the net.
With less than a minute remaining, Gow found Douglas Berkman '12 for the game winner. Bernicker held Sam Finney to a draw at the ensuing face off and the Maverick defense eclipsed the Crusaders for their 5th THSLL South District win.
St. John's travels to St. Andrew's of Austin for a SPC South counter game on Saturday (1 pm).
