Mavericks run out of time to catch the Tigers by the tail.
After spending the morning soaking in the wonders of Wahoowa, including a visit to the Men’s Varsity Lacrosse locker room, St. John’s Lacrosse team rolled down across the Rapidan on country roads with dogwoods and redbuds in full bloom to Woodberry Forest School.
With the excitement of new admit students, friends, and families in the stands of Hanes Field, the Tigers might have overlooked what was in store with a bunch of Texans with lacrosse sticks. A former Tiger himself, Coach Chambers had to do a double take to remember which team he was on. Having played his last football game on Hanes Field in the seventies, it was déjà vu all over again: the Tigers walking side by side down the hill from Leonard W. Dick Gymnasium, the Blue Ridge Mountains lining up at sunset, and orange paws painted on the drive from Hwy 15.
When the first whistle blew it was all about sport. Location aside, these two teams were oblivious to what was going on outside the lines.
The Mavericks struck first with 8:13 on the clock on a goal from Carl Bernicker ’14. Minutes later David Edwards ’13 found Douglas Berkman ‘12 for a 2 goal cushion. The Tigers responded only to have Berkman and Edwards hook up again for a 3-1 first quarter lead.
Woodberry reeled off 3 unanswered scores to go up by one, but with 1 second on the clock, Peter Cordill ’15 hit net to go into the break 4-4.
The Mavericks rode their momentum for a 5-4 lead on a Berkman/Paul Loya ’13 score. The Tiger’s Milikin (U VA) got his second of 4 goals to tie it up with 9:03 in the third. Will Griffin ’13, Jonathan Newar ’13, and Charlie Russ ‘15/Berkman found net minutes for the Mavericks largest lead of the day.
With seconds left in the third Milikin struck again and the Tigers scored 6 unanswered goals to take an 11-8 lead, before Logan Smith ’13 made it 11-9 late in the 4th. Both teams traded goals (Berkman/Newar), time ran out on the Mavericks to catch the Tigers by their tail.
Ben Griffin ’13 led the team with 6 gb’s and also had a hockey assist. Nate Whittle ’12 and Scott Hereford ’13 combined for 6 saves.
