Reversal of Fortune

Sam Chambers
In a battle between two of the top teams in the South, St.  John's and Houston Christian go down to the wire.
On Senior Night the Mavericks honored their 4 Senior captains, Douglas Berkman, Nate Whittle, Jack Craddock, and Chris Gow.

Needing to win by at least 4 to get a first round bye in the upcoming regional playoffs, the Mavericks cherished the moment of possibly playing their last game on Caven Field this season and forever for the four captains.

Jonathan Newar '13 got things rolling for the Mavericks on an early assist from Paul Loya '13 who scored the second goal unassisted for a 2-0 Maverick lead.  After Prior scored for Houston Christian, Chris Gow '12 found the net, but Prior got his second of 4 goals on the night to make it 3-2 at the end of the first.

With Logan Smith '13 trolling the waters at lsm, and picking up a game high 10 gb's, St. John's dominated the second period going up 7-3 at the break.  Gow, Loya and Edwards/Smith tallied for the Mavericks.

The third period was a reversal in fortune for the Mavericks.  Led by a their attack of Desadier, Lehle and Fales, the Mustangs took a 10-8 lead going into the final quarter before Grayson Crady '13 pulled the home team within a goal with 8:34 to go, but Prior struck again to put the Mustangs up by 2 with 6:38 to go.

Newar stepped up for the Mavericks once more on back to back goals and the game was knotted up at 11 with 4:47 to play.

Smith and Gow dominated on gb's and gave the Mavericks a chance to seal it in regulation but the ball bounced the Mustangs way.

St. John's had several good looks in overtime, but the extra man goal by Houston Christian was the final shot of the night.

St. John's finishes the regular season with a district record of 8-2 and is the number 3 seed in the THSLL South.
The Mavericks will host the 6th seeded team (tbd) on Sunday, April 22nd at 3:00 p.m. on Caven Field

In 2011 the Mavericks finished in 6th place.  Turn about is fair play.
