State Champs: Wrestling Grabs Ninth Prep State Title

Sam Chambers
St. John’s hosted the Prep State Wrestling Championships on Saturday, February 7, 2026. A week prior, the Mavericks won their seventh Texas State Duals title, edging out St. Thomas for the crown. The Mavs had also won the past seven (eight total) Prep State championships. It would seem like a foregone conclusion that they would win again, but St. John’s led only 156.5 to 156 over St. Thomas going into the finals.

Unlike dual matches, where teams compete against teams in a bracket format. In Prep State, individuals from each team compete in their own weight classes for points. The Mavericks would need to win more matches in the finals than St. Thomas in order to make it nine total championships.

“Whoever is going to win these matches (in the finals) will win the championship,” said Head Coach Alan Paul. “It’s what you want, a true competition. We are going to see what St. John’s Wrestling is all about.”

St. John’s responded with four 1st place finishes, one 2nd, three 3rd’s, and a 4th for a total of 214 points. St. Thomas finished with one 1st, three 2nd’s, one 3rd, and two 4th’s for 181 points for second overall. Bishop Lynch came in third place overall with 160 points.

The Mavericks travel to Fort Worth next Saturday for the SPC Championships.
