Journey in the Tourney- Mavs Make the NCAA's

Grace Nockolds '21 and Meg Shelburne '20 met in the NCAA D3 Field Hockey championship game on November 21. Nockolds' Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins and Shelburne's Panthers of Middlebury won their semi-final games against Trinity (CT) and Rowan respectively. The Panthers went on to defeat the Blue Jays 4-1 to claim their fourth consecutive NCAA title while completing a 22-0 season.  Hopkins finished 22-1. 

 

Sofia Castore ’20 and Harvard made the final four of the NCAA D1 Field Hockey Championships. The Crimson lost to Northwestern, the eventual champion. Amelia Williams ’20 and Iowa made it to the quarter-finals while Mary VanLoh ’20 and Tyler Kennedy ’21 of UVA were in the round of 16. 

In football, Mavericks are represented in the NCAA D3 playoffs.  Michael Spedale ’19 and the W&L Generals lost to Mt. Union in the first round. Will Leger ’20 and Johns Hopkins, who took out Salisbury, also lost to Mt. Union in the following round. Eric Johnson ’21 and RPI defeated Endicott and got by SUNY Cortland to advance to the quarterfinals against North Central (IL) on 12/4.

Margaret Trautner '16, a graduate student at Caltech, placed 147th out of 292 runners in the NCAA D3 Cross Country Championships in Louisville on November 20. NCAA cross country regional results had Drew Woodfolk ’18 and W&L Men’s Cross Country finishing 5th in the D3 Southern Regionals.  Davis Thames ’20 and Rice University Men’s team also finished 5th in the D1 South-Central Regionals. 

Olivia O'Reilly '21 and the NESCAC champions Middlebury Panthers soccer team also made the NCAA D3 tournament winning their first-round game against Lynchburg, while Carter Hollingsworth '21 of NCAA qualifier Amherst did the same against Lesley.  Lyndon Way ’21 and NEWMAC champs Babson also won their first-round NCAA game (vs Cabrini).  All three teams finished their run in the next round.
