In a game that used to draw hundreds of fans, extra security, and a final playoff number one ranking, the Mavericks made the most of the moment on a beautiful night at Scottland Yard. St. John's secured a first round City Championship home field advantage, and walked away with a swagger of owning the 77098 rivalry that only alumni can recall as the biggest game of the year. Down early, St. John's finally got on board with a goal from William Jewett followed by an unassited goal from William Young. Patrick Wilkey gave the Mavs the lead at half time, and Edward Williams made it 4-2 with 6:47 to go in the third period. With Peter Guffey and Luke Phillips scoring the last two goals, six different players found the back of the net for St. John's. Henry Waller had 3 saves and Phillips led the team in gb's again. St. John's travels to Highland Park on Saturday for a THSLL interdistrict counter based on the number one ranking from both teams in their divisions in 2007.
St. John's seemed to have the game under control for the majority of the night on Scotty Caven Field, but Kinkaid would eventually walk away the spoiler. This was an eerie feeling for the home team having dropped late leads to Woodands and Strake on the Maverick soil. The Mavericks took a convincing 2-0, then 4-2 , and 5-4 lead into half time with Luke Phillips scoring at the 4:43 mark of the second period. Up 6-4 on Patrick Wilkeys goal the Mavericks looked to finish their sweep of SPC foes on Caven Field. Zach Stoler scored to make it 6-5, but Peter Guffey answered to put SJ up 7-5 with 6:35 to go in the game. Stoler scored again to make it a one goal lead, but the Mavericks had the ball with 2:52 to go. Boone Badger made a huge save off a shot by Guffey and the Maverick ride forced a "Gilman" clear only to bounce into Jared Wadlers' stick and finally tie the game at the two minute mark. In the first overtime period St. John's defense held their own and William Young almost put the game away but his shot sailed over the net, setting up the second ot period. Luke Phillips set up for the final face off on the night (15th overall for #24) and fought for possession only to have the ball bounce again to the Falcons setting up their last possession and eventual game winning score by Jared Wadler.
St. John's sat hang dog on the sidelines in disbelief wondering where their lead went and where there season is going. As time ran out for the Mavericks on the final goal of the night, their team goal of winning the City Championship still is alive. St. John's hosts Lamar on Tuesday night and then travels to Highland Park on Saturday, April 19th to round out the regular season.
St. John's started the day wandering on the fields of central Texas waiting for the smoke to clear from the broken down bus on highway 71 at Smithville. With inevitable delay, the boys took refuge in the local diner down the road and ate what proved to be the perfect pre game meal consisting of chips, amp, red bull, fajitas, and one lonely salad.
The girls team stepped up big to give us their bus for the final leg of the trip and the return after the game.
When the whistle finally blew at St. Andrew's for the opening face off, St. John's dominated for for the first half, leaving the Cru in the wake of a 10-1 half time lead. Ryan Cordill assisted on the first goal less than two minutes into the game to William Young (3, 4) and the scoring went the Mavericks way. One of Texas' legendary oak trees is located in Austin, but St. John's own "Texas Oak," Edward Williams, proved to command the crease in Austin on 4/4. E5 scored five of his six goals in the first half, as the Mavericks seemed to be flawless on the well groomed field at St. Andrew's. Patrick Wilkey went two and two, Peter Guffey had two goals and an assist, Reed Daniel scored, and Peter Crain notched his first assist of the season. Luke Phillips also tallied an assist and Guffey led the team in gb's.
The Mavericks remain undefeated in SPC play and set their sites on Dallas for the SPC Championship later in April.
Up 8-5 on Edward Williams' goal with 3:43 in the third, The Mavericks ran out of gas, letting the Woodlands back in the game for 3 unanswered goals. The Highlanders were down early but snuck back into a 5-5 tie at halftime. The Mavericks went back on the offensive in the third quarter with Patrick Wilkey scoring a man up goal followed by Peter Guffey's unassisted score. Williams scored the third and fourth goals of the half. St. John's Luke Phillips led the team in gb's and face offs again.
St. John's hits the road for spring break competition starting Saturday, 3/15 vs Hun School, NJ, Providence Day, NC, Westminster, CT, Germantown Academy, PA, and Hatboro Horsham, PA. Varsity Red plays St. Mark's, MA, EHS, VA, Denver East, CO, and Mercersburg, PA. JV plays Garnet Valley, PA, Trinity, NY, and MICDS, MO.
Led by a stingy goalie play from Henry Waller, and double digit scoring from Patrick Wilkey, Edward Williams, Peter Guffey, and William Young, St. John's pulled away from St. Mary's Hall for a 10-4 SPC counter win. Luke Phillips and Guffey led the teams with 6 gb's each. Reed Daniel and Cameron Cuenod also scored. Jett Williams tallied an assist.
St. John's fought through a tough SMH defense and finally pulled ahead 8-3 on a goal from Edward Williams late in the third period.
The Mavericks hit the road on Tuesday against pre-season number one ranked Woodlands.
On a beautiful spring night on Scotty Caven Field, St. John's Varsity Lacrosse won the noon-counter over our friends next door from Lamar. SJ took control of the game and found the net primarily in the first and third quarters. The Mavericks got points from Patrick Wilkey, Tim Root, Edward Williams, Peter Guffey, and William Young with Root and Williams posting hat tricks again.
St. John's looked to run away from Lamar at the end of the first period by scoring three goals in the final two minutes. Williams, Wilkey, and Young found the right mix to take a 4-2 lead. The Mavericks went on another run in the third and went up 9-4 on the Redskins, and finished up with a 10-5 win. SJS hosts St. Mary's Hall on Saturday at noon for our first SPC showdown on Caven Field.
St. John's Mavericks won their THSLL South District opener over the Kingwood Mustangs Wedenesday night on Scotty Caven Field. With the media editing class in full force, the Mavs took an early lead and never gave it back to Kingwood. Tim Root started the scoring and hats off to Peter Guffey, Reed Daniel, and Edward Williams, all with 3 goals each. Tri Captain, Luke Phillips, led the team with 7 gb's. Zach Gaitz and William Young also scored. The Vasity hosts Lamar on Wednesday, March 5, 7pm on Caven Field.
Peter Guffey started the scoring for the 2008 season to give the Mavericks a lead they would keep throught the moonlit night on Skip Lee Field vs Austin High School. Edward Williams added the next goal (four total) as St. John's went up by two and eventually 5-2 at the half on an unassisted goal by William Young as time expired. William Jewett, Patrick Wilkey, William Payne, Reed Daniel, and Luke Phillips, also tallied points on the night. Henry Waller and the defense stood stout around the cage with Waller coming up with 5 saves. Guffey, Daniel, Phillips, and Ryan Cordill led the team in gb's. This was a rare opener on "beautiful Skip Lee Field." The drum corps, Ted Curry, and a raucus crowd keep the momentum moving for the Mavs the entire game. St. John's hosts Kingwood Wednesday night 700 pm on Scotty Caven Field. Bring your cowbells, pots, and pans and cheer on your mighty Mavericks!
The Mavericks found little momemtum on one of the muddiest 'slingers this Saturday. Edward Wiliams, Zach Gaitz, and Reed Daniel all scored. Nick Tucher made some great saves, but the Mavs fell to Strake Jesuit, Kingwood, and Highland Park. St. John's plays at Kinkaid this Wednesday 400 pm- 600 pm.
