Once again the cross town rivalry did not let a soul in Scottland Yard walk away early from another close encounter in third game of the season. It was "win and you're still in" for the TSHLL City Championship rights. The two previous contests between the Mavericks and Knights were split with a St. John's double OT victory in March followed by a one goal win for Episicopal a week ago in Austin at the SPC Championships. This game was going to be tight from the get go just like the other two as the score was on hold at zero until William Jewett found the net from a Kyle Sparks assist with 59 seconds left in the first quarter. Team defense took over for both teams well into the second period, but Jewett showed up again this time finding Cameron Cuenod for his first goal of the year. Cuenod ripped an outside shot past a stalwart Jack McDaniel, but Episcopal answered seconds later on a transition goal from Ryan Snyder assisted by Parker Mason. The half ended with a slim 2-1 Maverick advantage.
Ordinary players were starting to play extraordinary for the Mavericks and Jet Williams picked up the tempo and a gb in the third period to hit Patrick Wilkey for another St. John's two goal lead. Like recent history, EHS would answer with scores from Andy Hale and Jack Knaus to tie it up in the fourth period heading towards familiar overtime ground on Scotty Caven Field.
Team defensive stole the show again for the next 8 minutes, and the only question at that point is would the game end in regulation? Possessions hinged on gb's with the Mavericks holding the edge 47-36 for the day. Kyle Spark's and Zach Gaitz led the Mavs with fifteen total, but it was Reed Daniel's lose ball scoop that led to the pivotal fourth goal. Daniel broke from the defensive box and hit Patrick Wilkey who found Jordan Schuler for the game winner that trickled in with 3:17 on the clock. EHS had two final chances to tie it up, but Henry Waller came up big in the goal for St. John's and Ryan Cordill ran out the clock after picking up another gb.
Waller had 10 saves on the day. Even though the Mavericks were outshot 37-30 by the Knights, it was the ground ball stat that gave St. John's the edge they needed to advance to their 18th City Championship. The Mavericks will host Strake Jesuit.
Out-shooting Plano 38 to 37 proved to be the difference as the Mavericks and Wildcats scrapped it out for 54minutes and 4 seconds on Scotty Caven Field in a THSLL inter-district counter. It was Deja vu all over again, coming off a 8-7
thriller double OT victory on Patrick Wilkey's goal against Episcopal
earlier this week. Would Wilkey wind up with the last goal again?
The game took place within the 15th annual Texas Junior Jam with Texas'
future prospects watching from the sidelines inbetween games while the high school players within the lines were trying to show off what they had become since their own Jammin days.
Plano got on board early with Matt Kelley scoring unassisted. Ross Gillum made it 2-0 Plano, but Buddy Carruth got the Mavericks moving with their first goal at the 5:36 mark in the opening period. Zach Gaitz added another and Plano's Michael Oravetz scored from a Zak Heinritz assist. It would be Gillum time twice more to put Plano up 5-2 early in the second, but the Mavericks were just waking up from ACT exams and ISAS commitments earlier in the day.
Caldwell Flores scored on a break and Reed Daniel put one past Austin Black to go into halftime down 4-5.
Gaitz found Patrick Wilkey midway throught the third to tie it up and Daniel got the Mavs their first lead entering the final 12 minutes of regulation.
Plano's Heinritz tied it up again at 6 with 9:07 to go, then Daniel gave the Mavericks the lead again at the 7:23 mark. Gillum however, went to work drawing slides and found Kelley for the tie at 7 apiece.
Meanwhile Maverick's Henry Waller was minding the net with 15 saves in regulation, and Plano's Brown was posting his own game changing performance as the two goalies stopped shots to send the game into overtime.
They were so good that the Mavericks found themselves back where they were on Tuesday night.
Wilkey and Gillum had chances to finish for each team, but Brown and Waller were too stout.
As the clock went below the two minute mark in the the second OT, out of nowhere Jordan Schuler's shot was lucky number 38 for the the game winner, assisted by non other than Patrick Wilkey. Final: Mavericks 8 Wildcats 7, double OT. John Ytterberg, Reed Daniel, Patrick Wilkey, Ryan Cordill and Will Wallace led the Mavs with 5 gb's each.
It could have been "Thrilla in Manila," "War on the Shore," or "The Drive." Some might have called it "Maven on Caven," "Save of the Day," "Light's out Wilkey, or "The Dive."
It was a Rivalry Row. St. John's vs Episcopal, a contest that dates back to 1989 with the series unofficially 32-13 in St. John's favor. Like any rivalry the past records are meaningless and tonight was not much different than some of the recent battles which ended in a Hoffman to Root game winner on Simmons Field in 2003, or the Lee Field Root to Root miracle with 4 seconds to go to tie it up in regulation and win it in OT. This night would be different but also the same. It was 3/31 and closing in on April fools as the game went into the second overtime before Patrick Wilkey went "lights out" to end the drama that started with John Ytterberg's goal at 10:45 in the first quarter to give the Mavs their only lead in regulation. Episcopal rattled off 5 unanswered goals (Cleary, Skibber, Alderman, and Flemming) before William Payne got the Mavs within 3 followed by Zach Gaitz/Reed Daniel goal to make it 5-3 Knights. EHS found the net two more times with goals by Willie Alderman and Hunter Houston to take a commanding 7-3 lead with change on the clock. As time was getting to expire in the second period, Patrick Wilkey scrambled for a loose ball, found Zach Gaitz who got it to Payne for a pivotal score going into halftime.
The Mavericks went into another gear, possessing the ball, scoring and most importantly stopping the Knights offense.
As the second half rolled in the Mavs favor, parents, faculty, fans, and alumni, all packed the far sideline, were chanting "HENRY WALLER..." after several of his seventeen saves on the night.
Reed Daniel scored early in the third period followed by Zach Gaitz from William Young at the 7:21 mark. Payne struck again to tie it at 7 and both teams, led by their goalies, buckled down on defense for the remainder of the third and fourth quarters. Jack McDaniel and Waller put on a clinic in the crease as shots could not find the net and the game went into overtime with the keepers coming up big. It was not until the second OT that St. John's seemed to loose its backbone when Waller was flagged for an illegal body check. Fresh off the bench, Krishnan Rajagopalan, stepped in to save the game. Krish stopped a man up shot and made the dive of his career chasing a ball out of bounds that set up the game winner. Reed Daniel cleared the ball to Wilkey, who took all he had to rip it past McDaniel for the final score as March came to a close on Caven Field.
It was "sun's out, gun's out" for William Payne on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Scotty Caven Field. Payne scored the first goal of the game and the last in addition to two more and an assist to lead the Mavericks over the Cru of St. Andrew's (Austin) in a SPC counter. Paynes first goal was scored at 10:16 in the first from a Zach Gaitz assist. Patrick Wilkey made it 2-0 Mavs. The Crusaders' Brigham answered back to put SAS on the board, but The Mavericks would put up four more for the half. Reed Daniel assisted Jordan Schuler, Gaitz scored unassisted, William Jewett scored from a Will Wallace feed, and Payne's second goal made it 6-2 St. John's at the half. St. Andrew's got two goals from Schamberg and another from Cowan cut the lead to two, but Payne showed up once more to make it 7-3 Mavericks. Wilkey found Jewett and Payne got to Wilkey to make it 9-4 early in the fourth. Petrick got the Cru's last score and Willy P got SJ to ten for the win. John Ytterberg picked up 9 gb's and Henry Waller had 10 saves on the day.
Notable alumni were in attendance. The Atlas brothers, Ryan '03, and David '04, saw the game and visited with the team afterwards as the Mavs started to prepare for "Rivalry Row" starting with Episcopal on Tuesday night at Scottland Yard.
In the battle of the SJ's St. John's toppled Strake Jesuit in a South District THSLL counter. In between sheets of rain on the Alchediak SJ Field turf, St. John's went out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on goals by Patrick Wilkey assisted by William Young and Zach Gaitz. The Crusaders answered back in the second with scores from Joey Wippold, Ed Lee and Matt D'Herbes to go up 4-3.
Young and Wilkey combined on two of the next three goals for the Mavericks to take the lead for good at 5-4.
The Mavericks started out strong in the third quarter with goals from William Payne assited by Young and an unassisted goal from defenseman Jeff Wu. Wu's goal turned out to be the game winner coming off a fast break. Reed Daniel made it 8 -4 Mavs at the end of the third quarter from a Gaitz assist.
Strake made a run in the fourth, but the Mavericks scored last with Young finding the open net.
Henry Waller had 12 saves for St. John's and defenseman, John Ytterberg, picked up 8 gb's. St. John's had thirty shots on the night.
With the temperatures rising in the 80's, St. John's took the field against the Grit and Grace of Westminster, CT. Trailing early, the Mavericks showed some of their own grit and a little gravy as Billy Young stuck an unassisted goal to put St. John's on the board. The black and gold would pull away to a 5-2 lead, but goals by Patrick Wilkey and Young cut the lead to 7-4 at the half. Zach Gaitz scored early in the third and Peter Crain got two more plus an assist to pull the Mavs within 2 goals late in the fourth. Blake Upchurch found Jordan Schuler for his lone goal. Henry Waller, Krishnan Rajagopalan, and Nate Whittle netted ten saves together. Tim McDugald and Parker Schiffer led the team in gb's.
St. John's takes on Denver East at sundown to wrap up the 2009 Spring Break Lacrosse Trip.
St. John's jumped out to to a quick lead over Denver East in the final game at Disney Wild World of Sports. William Jewett William Payne, and Caldwell Flores put the Mavs up 3-0 in the first quarter. East score two in the second period and Zach Gaitz got the fourth goal of the half for the Mavericks. Reed Daniel just missed the net before the clock ran out and St. John's held their two goal lead late in the third period until East scored their final goal.
St. John's went scoreless for the rest of the third, but with 5:36 to go, Jett Williams put the Mavericks up by two and the lead held over Denver East with the sun setting over Orlando.
St. John's found a Bergen buzz saw on day two at Disney Wild World of Sports. The New Jersey boyz put on an all around clinic for the Mavericks to go up 10-0 at the half. Multiple players for Bergen are headed for D1 schools next year including Hopkins and Carolina, in addition to D3 Bowdoin.
St. John's can put a feather in their cap for scoring four goals in the second half started by Zach Gaitz's shot seconds into the third period. Caldwell Flores added two more and Peter Crain got his first goal of the season. Henry Waller, Krishnan Rajagopalan, and Nate Whittle combined for 10 saves on the day. Flores led the team in gb's.
The Mavericks face Westminster, CT and Denver East on Sunday to wrap up the competition at Disney.
The Mavericks Lacrosse team, fresh off the plane with their Texas pride, scarlet shorts, and cowboy boots, came through in a grand finale shooting display in overtime to defeat The Big Red of Exeter at the Disney Wild World of Sports in Orlando, Florida.
St. John's struck first on a goals by Zach Gaitz and Reed Daniel to take a 2-0 lead. Exeter answered back to make it 2-2 at the quarter. Patrick Wilkey and Kyle Sparks found the net for the Mavericks in the second period, but Exeter went up 6-4 at the break, even with Henry Waller's 4 saves.
18 seconds into the third period William Young scored off a Zach Gaitz assist and then returned the favor to Gaitz. Exeter scored two more, and William Jewett finished the third period scoring with a feed from Gaitz. Krishnan Rajagopalan had one save for St. John's.
Trailing 8-7 at the beginning of the fourth period, The Mavericks were hanging their hat on Freshman goalie, Nate Whittle, for the final 12 minutes. All the Mavs needed was one score and a shutout by Whittle. Whittle and the Maveirck defense, led by John Ytterberg, Jeff Wu and Ryan Cordill did their part. Would the offense answer?
St. John's had numerous shooting chances to tie it up, but time was winding down under the last minute of regulation. With 56 seconds on the clock, St. John's got a turn over and almost scored on a shot by Daniel. William Young got the inbounds ball and found Patrick Wilkey for the tying score with 18 seconds remaining. Gaitz's last second shot almost ended it in regulation but the battle of the reds would be decided by sudden victory overtime.
Daniel won the OT face off and set up a scoring chance that missed the mark. Jett Williams picked a a precious gb in transition, drew a penalty, and the Mavs converted with Young assisting Daniel for the game winner. Final: Scarlet 9 Big Red 8
At 10:21 in the first quarter Zach Gaitz found William Young for an early lead they would never give up against the Woodlands with the full moon rising over Scotty Caven Field. William Payne assisted Patrick Wilkey to make it 2-0 then The Wooldlands answered with a goal from Roger late in the quarter. Wilkey and Young combined for another goal and it was 5-1 Mavs with Jordan Schuler and Wilkey scoring again.

St. John's sets their sites on Orlando Florida for four games against out of state competition from the Atlantic coast.
After St. John’s went on a 9-0 tear in the second half of the St. Mary’s Hall game, they were primed for survival mode for the next 18 hours. Two bus breakdowns later the boys in scarlet and black used the help of parents, alumni, and coaches to shuttle to the Stasney field complex in South Austin, home of the Bowie Bulldogs.
Primed for a physical battle, the Mavericks made do with the dust and hay packed turf to take a lead on Patrick Wilkey’s goal early in the first period and never trail again.
Zach Gaitz scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-1. Then the half ended on Jordan Schulers’ man down goal to make it 3-2.
Tough Maverick defense led by Henry Waller’s 15 saves, held the Bulldogs scoreless on 6 penalties in the second half including a 3 minute non-releasable foul.
Reed Daniel started the second half scoring with an assisted goal from William Young and then Daniel found Wilkey for the second goal of the half. Wilkey then got garbage as time wound down in the quarter. Young scored late in the fourth on a Daniel assist, and the Mavs found their third counter victory in as many buses to get them back home for a city showdown against the Woodlands on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. on Scotty Caven Field.
St. John's, fresh off a 4 hour bus ride, spotted St. Mary's Hall as many goals before they decided to take control and go to work. The Mavericks were shut out in the first period, but Max Susman got the Mavs on board with an assist from William Payne early in the second. Patrick Wilkey made it 2-2 a minute later, and after the Barons scored again, Reed Daniel knotted it up at 3. The Barons would score their last goal at the end of the half to be up 4-3.
Buddy Carruth started the second half tear. Ten seconds into the quarter William Young found Carruth for his first goal of the season. William Jewett got the game winner from Daniel and it was all Mavs: Cameron Cuenod assited by Payne, Caldwell Flores from Young, Daniel-Wilkey, Payne-Young, Young-Gaitz, Jewett-Daniel and finally Wilkey from Young.
The 9-0 tear brings back the season of 1996 when the St. John's Rebels went undefeated and took out St. Mary's Hall on the same field. Back then there was no track, no lights, no scoreboard, and the knotted oak trees hung over the field. The 1996 game had St. John's up 9-0 at the half only to win 10-9 when time ran out. 13 seasons later St. John's sat stunned at the break, lit up by the Barons and their lights, and the only thing not working for the Hall was their scorboard. It was in disrepair as much as the Mavericks. But the Mavs got a "Buddy check." No score or minutes in site, they unknotted themselves and powered their own clock by counting the ground balls, possessions and shots on cage until the last whistle sounded.
With their whites on it was "fight's on" for the Mavs against a tough herd of Mustangs from Kingwood for the THSLL district opener on Scotty Caven Field.
The Mavericks took a commanding 5-0 lead in the second quarter with goals from Reed Daniel, William Young, Patrick Wilkey, and Zach Gaitz. Daniel and Gaitz assisted two scores.
Kingwood, however, rallied to score two late goals in the first half to make it 5-2 Mavs at the break.
Back on their feet, St. John's scored quickly in the 3rd period with Gaitz assisted by Jett Williams followed by William Payne assisted by William Young. Colin Schopfer scored Kingwood's final goal and Daniel finished with an unassisted score at the end of the game.
Will Wallace, Jett Williams and Patrick Wilkey led the team with 6 gb's each. Henry Waller had 8 saves on the night.
St. John's travels to San Antonio for a 7pm Friday night game followed by a 100 pm game in Austin vs Bowie.
After a needed break in the afternoon, St. John’s hitched up to Barnhardt Stadium for one more show before the sun started to set under the trees in Memorial. Zach Gaitz started the scoring and then assisted Billy Young before Caldwell Flores, fresh off the trail, hit the game winner at the end of the first period. The combo of Daniel and Gaitz made it 4-1 and Max Susman assisted Wilkey, followed by Young to William Payne to make it 6-2 with 5:20 to go in the third. Flores and Susman connected for another score then Wilkey and Gaitz found the net once more. Hats off to those Mavericks: 2009 K.I.L.T. Champions!
Celebrating a win over Episcopal can last only so long, especially at 900 a.m. in the morning and when the next opponent is The Woodlands. A stout squad, the Highlanders, made the Mavericks look like they only had 3 practices when they squared off at the Mudslinger the previous Saturday. In their first game they cruised by Lamar 12-2 and seemed primed to bring the lumber to the Mavericks once again. If any stray cowboy found his way back into Kinkaid from Buffalo Bayou, he would have tipped his hat to The Woodlands at the beginning of the second period. St. John’s was down 4-1 before they could smell the coffee. If it was not for the return favor of Gaitz to Daniel at the beginning of the second period, and then the reverse combo two minutes later, the Mavs would have been smelling cow chips for the rest of the day.
16 and 22 made it a two goal game and then Patrick Wilkey grabbed the reins with Billy “The Kid” Young to tie the game at 5 with 5:15 left in the third. 7 saves by Henry Waller and a team leading 6 gb’s from John Ytterberg and another 12 from the “Williams” gang (not including injured Edward Williams) set the stage for a final shot. Wilkey dug for a gb behind the crease and fed Jordan Schuler for the game winner as the cowbells rang loud enough to jolt any sleeping dudes back in the saddle. Hats off to the Mavericks!
Starting with 4 riders in 1952, trail rides have brought attention to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and on Saturday more than 4000 hoofed it east into H-Town. The St. John’s Boys’ Lacrosse team, up before dawn, headed west through Memorial Park on a ride of their own that would end at dusk at the K.I.L.T. (Kinkaid Invitational Lacrosse Tournament)
First to arrive and last to leave, St. John’s would have more on their plate than biscuits and gravy for the opener against their other neighborhood foe, Episcopal. The Knights, on horses of their own, ran circles around the Mavs to take an early 2-0 lead. Once the dust began to settle, however, Scarlet and Black found their game on both sides of the field. William Young hit Patrick Wilkey at 4:58 to make it 1-2 and then Reed Daniel found Zach Gaitz to make it a tie. Daniel scored midway through the 3rd period from a Young assist and the Mavericks took over when John Ytterberg found Jordan Schuler with time running down in the third.
The Knights scored again but the Gaitz-Daniel dual gave the Mavs a two goal lead and Young found Wilkey to finish the scoring the way they started it. Henry Waller had 9 saves when the sun finally came over the trees in Memorial Park giving the Mavericks and 4000 riders a great day to look forward to.
Zach Gaitz (1/2) had the Mavs on the board quickly with an assist from Jett Williams 42 seconds into the game. Reed Daniel won the first face off (9) and Will Wallace got the gb(3) to give the Mavericks the first possession and score on a windy night at Scotty Caven Field. Kyle Sparks (2/1) found Patrick Wilkey (5/0) to make it 2-0 minutes later and the Mavs were breezing towards an easy win.
Neighborhood foe, Lamar, was not going to break in the "friendly" contest. The Redskin attack unit of Golden, Lillie, and Nugent and midfielder, Marchione put in 4 unanswered goals to take a 4-2 first quarter lead.
Senior Captain, Wilkey, stepped up his leadership on the field and answered back with assists from William Young (2/4) to tie it up at the half.
The third period started like the game with Gaitz involved with the scoring. #22 found Sparks and Wilkey for scores to give the Mavs a lead for good. William Payne also scored from Sparks while the Redskins hung around with goals from Golden and Marchione.
The fourth quarter was all Mavericks, and W's. William Young to Wilkey, William Young, Waller save, William Young to Daniel, Waller save, William Young, Waller save, and finally Sparks from Carruth. Waller ended the game with 9 saves on the night and Reed Daniel finished with 9 gb's.
The Mavericks will face off against Episcopal at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday at The inaugural Kinkaid Invitational Lacrosse Tournament.
With the boys in recovery mode after the first game, a cold front snapped through the Woodlands, dropping the temperature and letting out rain that made for a mixture of a true “Mudslinger.”
The Mavericks took an early lead off of Cameron Cuenod’s unassisted goal, but as
the temperature dropped, so did the Mav’s. St. John’s found the penalty box more often than the ball, and Westlake took advantage of EMO opportunities to negate any rallies from the boys in scarlet and black. When the sky cleared it was Westlake 6, St. John’s 3.
The bus rolled out of Scottland Yard at 8:59 a.m. with Bruce Warren at the wheel. The boys of spring sat shoulder to shoulder in their scarlet and black swag chatting it up in anticipation of tough competition at the annual “Mudslinger,” originally founded and hosted at St. John’s, and recently moved to The Woodlands. Even though the three game format is not for a trophy, a tournament championship, or any official ranking, the fanfare makes for game readiness. Opponents, zebras, whistles, and horns bring out the competition in all of us. When the first face off was won by Reed Daniel and the first ground ball found Jett Williams stick, the Mavericks seemed to be in mid season stride, out shooting The Woodlands and possessing the ball for the majority of the first half. Zach Gaitz and William Jewett scored and the Mavericks were only down 3-2 at the half. The next 25 minute period, however made for many early season mistakes. The flash of the new unis faded as The Woodlands, the 2008 City Champs, proved their mettle and ran away to a 7-2 victory at Gullo Park, leaving the Mavericks in the dust.
The great thing about the “Mudslinger” three game format is for new opportunities and a chance to find a way to make things work. Would “Last one, best one,” echoed by Coach Chambers be a self fulfilling prophecy? Or would the skunks come out of the woods?
Unlike the first two games, SJ started off slow against the Maroons of Austin High School. Austin’s midfielder, Will Merritt, whipped off an unassisted goal to take an early 1-0 lead. The Maroons went to a circle offense and seemed poised to take charge of the game and send St. John’s back to the city with zero wins.
The Mavericks however woke up in all facets of the a working man's game with their pride on the line. Tough midfield defense led by Buddy Carruth started off the rally of 6 unanswered goals for St. John’s. Ground balls, led by Ryan Cordill, and William Wallce, clearing passes from Jeff Wu, John Ytterberg, and Henry Waller all created transition scoring chances that were converted by Patrick Wilkey, William Jewett, Peter Crain, and Zach Gaitz. When the final whistle blew the only stripes on the field were the zebras. The skunks and the Mavericks did a 180 and headed home.
