The split squad of the St. John's JV Boys' met a blended Varsity/JV team of the Emery Weiner Jaguars at Lee LeClear Tennis Center on Monday, April 4. Our boys battled through four close matches (three Singles and one Doubles). Lines 1 and 2 in Singles went down to the wire, with Naveen Krishnan dropping his match by one break of serve and William Wallace barely missing garnering the victory in a tie breaker. Kenji Chevray had a much easier time at Line 3, winning at love. In Doubles, the the team of Ryan Chang/Nicholas Echeverri dropped a their macth against a veteran Jaguar team. On Monday, April 4, the SJS Boys' JV traveled to Lee LeClear Tennis Center to take on the Briarwood School Mustangs. The Mustangs brought their state playoff bound doubles team of Drew Cramer and Nick Vachon to get more matches in before state, playing three different Maverick lines. On Monday, April 4, the St. John's JV Tennis Team traveled to Lee LeCLear Tennis Center to take on the Jaguars of Emery Weiner and the Mustangs of the Briarwood School. Emery Weiner brought a small contingent of players from its varsity and JV squads and prevailed 3 matches to 1 with two of the losses coming down to a tie breaker and one service break. With this in mind, we look forward to our rematch a week away on Monday, April 11 back at Lee LeClear.

The St. John's JV Boys traveled on Friday, April 1, to the Memorial Park Tennis Center to take on the Eagles of Second Baptist before heading into the weekend. This was a rematch between the two teams in which the Mavericks prevailed 7-0. This time around, Second Baptist blended its Varsity and JV into a larger and stronger contingent, bringing over a dozen. 15 matches were played, with our lads winning 10. The St. John's Maverick Boys JV Tennis traveled to take on the Crusaders of Strake Jesuit under heavy skies and a misting rain for the rematch of the two squads. The Crusaders fielded a strong team again and played some tough, determined tennis against our travelers, winning most of the key points and exerting pressure from start to finish. The lads battled but today came up against a stout opponent firing on all cylinders. But no time to wait as the next match is Thursday, March 31, at AWTY International. Hope to see you there. The Maverick Boys traveled to Lee LeClear Tennis Center, winning the rematch against the Wildcats of Westbury Christian 6-1. The two teams' first encounter resulted in a 6-0 victory for the Mavs. This tie featured five lines of Singles and two lines of Doubles. In Singles, four of the five lines featured debutants in Will Rippeto, Louis Morrell, Ribhu Nag, and KevinJung with Ryan Chang playing Singles for the second time this season. In Doubles, the lines of Nicholas Echeverri/Naveen Krishnan and Kenji Chevray/Willaim Wallace took the court for St. John's. All in all, a good win with many great takeaways for the lads as the team heads into time off for the Easter Break. And many thanks to Jackie Ferrufino for the wonderful photos. ?The St. John's Mavericks JV Boys traveled north to John Cooper to take on the Dragons of John Cooper on Tuesday, March 22. Five matches were played, with all decided at most by one break of serve, two going to tie breakers. Out of these five, the Mavericks could only gain the upper hand in one of them, as Raunak Kundagrami prevailed at Line 1 Singles in a tie breaker. In Line 2 Singles, Ryan Chang gave up a service break in his last service game to drop his match. In Doubles, at Line 1, the Maverick tandem of Naveen Krishnan/William Wallace went to the wire, coming up just short in a tie breaker of their own. At Line 2, Louis Morrell/Will Rippeto lost their match which featured one service break at 4-6. Kevin Jung/Ribhu Nag at Line 3 fought hard, coming up short in their match, 3-6. This coming Thursday, March 24, the team looks to bounce back while splitting in two to take on the Wildcats of Westbury Christian at Lee LeClear Tennis Center and the Cavaliers of YES Prep Brays-Oaks at the Homer Ford Tennis Center. The Maverick JV Boys' Tennis Team gathered one last time before heading off in all directions for Spring Break 2016, traveling down to the Harry Taylor Tennis Center in Pasadena, Texas very early on an overcast, damp Friday. 16 players made the trek, with all 16 playing at least two matches. The lads fielded four lines of Singles (Kenji Chevray, Naveen Krishnan, Raunak Kundagrami, and William Wallace) and six lines of Doubles (featuring the tandems of Ryan Chang/Nicholas Echeverri, Kevin Jung/Ribhu Nag, Louis Morrell/Will Rippeto, Eli Maierson/Andy Tockman, Ethan Boniuk/Eric Hang, Roosh Bhosale/Vivek Kapur). 19 matches were played with 14 victories and 15 defeats, including five in which Maverick teammates faced each other in the tournament draws. All in all, a full day of tennis before accelerating into our break. Under threatening skies and gusty winds, the Maverick JV Boys took on the Bulldogs of the British International School Houston and the Wildcats of the Westbury Christian School at Lee LeClear Tennis Center on Monday, March 7. St. John's Mavericks vs. British International School Bulldogs The Bulldogs lived up to their namesakes, fielding strong players who were a bit tougher in key situations against our battling Mavericks, gaining a 4-2 victory against SJS. In Singles, Ryan Chang and Nicholas Echeverri battled through until the end, facing opposition that brought a bit more to the table this day in terms of strength and consistency. In Doubles, our Mavericks fielded four lines. The pairings of Roosh Bhosale/Raunak Kundagrami and VivekKapur/Eli Maierson each pushed ahead early in their matches and maintained their leads through the finish. The pairings of Alex Ham/Andy Tockman and Ethan Boniuk/Eric Hang got out to slow starts and were not able to turn things around against strong opponents. But the boys are smart and resilient, learning from their time on court in these matches. Looking forward, with some work and more match play under their belts, the lads will be ready for our rematch on April 18. Mark your calendars.
St, John's Mavericks vs. Westbury Christian School Wildcats The Mavericks broke out of the starting gate in fine fashion against Westbury Christian and did not let up as our team gained a 6-0 sweep. In Singles, Naveen Krishnan, William Wallace, Kenji Chevray, and Raunak Kundagrami, all won, showing patience and the willingness to stay in the point in less than ideal conditions. In Doubles, the pairings of Louis Morrell/Will Rippeto and Kyle Jung/Ribhu Nag each fought back, overcoming breaks of serve against to clinch their matches. Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 24 for the return engagement with the Wildcats.

The Maverick Boys' Junior Varsity Tennis traveled north to Lone Star College on Friday, March 4, to take on the Concordia Lutheran Crusaders in a dual match. Eleven players made the trek and all eleven tucked away victories, providing a sweep as we head into our last week of practice, match and tournament play before taking Spring Break. The takeaways from this match for the lads were: 1) improved general awareness throughout the matches, 2) clamping down during critical phases and moments (e.g. - deuce points, break opportunities, and break points against us), 3) better communication and blending of our doubles teams, 4) willingness to stay in the point, and 5) good spirit, energy, and fight throughout the matches. Next up on the calendar on Monday, March 7, are two matches, one against the British International School and the other versus Westbury Christian. Both will take place at Lee LeClear Tennis Center with 4:00 PM starts. So, come on out and witness some spirited play as we progress through our season. Until then, as always, go Mavericks!

The Boys' Junior Varsity Tennis Team traveled to the Houston Racquet Club to take on the Second Baptist Eagles on February 29. looking to bounce back from a tough and close season opener against Strake Jesuit. Seven lines were played featuring four singles and three doubles, with our travelers from Claremont gaining a 7-0 sweep. In singles. Vijay Patel (2019), Andrew Awad (2017), Eric Lee (2019), and Sadde Mohamed (2017) came through with wins, controlling the tempo and tone of their sets from start to finish. In doubles, the tandems of Naveen Krishnan (2019)/William Wallace (2019), Ryan Chang(2019)/Nicholas Echeverri (2019), and Kevin Jung (2018)/Ribhu Nag (2018) all prevailed exhibited good execution and growing understanding of the different geometry presented on the doubles' court. All in all, a good bounce back after last week's opener, building towards the rest of the season, with Briarwood School next up. Until then, hard work and good attitude for our fellow Mavericks. Taking the court in singles were Kenjy Chevray and Kevin Jung, with both garnering victories. On the doubles' courts, the teams of Raunak Kundagrami/Eli Maierson and Vivek Kapur/Alex Ham came out with a win and the tandem of Ethan Boniuk/Eric Hang gave it their best but fell in a hard fought match. Those traveling with the squad also included Ribhu Nag, Davis Flowers, Andrew Tockman, and Roosh Bhosali. All in all, a good day on the courts, featuring the debuts of Kenji Chevray, Eli Maierson, Raunak Kundagrami, Vivek Kapur, Alex Ham. Ethan Boniuk, and Eric Hang.
