Lini prepares for a forehand Begoña hits a solid return of serve

Leap Year Day... We Were Leaped Over!

Marci Oesch Bahr
On the first Feb. 29th in four years, we met our biggest challenge!
On the first Feb. 29th in four years, we met our biggest challenge, Memorial High School JV Tennis team.  Memorial's Varsity is consistently in the top of the public school state champions, and their JV team is VERY good, their facility is AMAZING, and their coaches are so nice!
We started with Doubles and for Line 1 paired Lini with Sophia.  They started out really well and at 6-1, the strong Memorial team of Lillian and Caroline figured things out and steamrolled the next games for a final score of 7-9!  Sophia was fierce at the net, and Lini's powerful forehand was working well but the Memorial team was really smart in their placement.
At Line 2 Doubles, Dalia and Lauren teamed up against Memorial's Riley and Keeley who were also very strong!  Though Dalia and Lauren played well, the final was a loss, 3-8.
At Line 3 Doubles, Begoña and Abi partnered against Hope and Elizabeth.  Abi's net game was strong and Begoña's ground strokes were working well, but they were outmatched with a final score of 2-8.
Time for singles... with similar results:
Line 1- Lini v. Celeste, 2-8
Line 2- Dalia v. Lillian, 2-8
LIne 3- Sophia v. Caroline, 2-8
LIne 4- Lauren v. Keeley, 1-8
Line 5- Begoña v. Riley, 3-8
Line 6- Abi v. Elizabeth, 2-8
We had time and Begoña wanted a 3rd match and played Hope with Hope just edging past her dealing us a 6-8 loss.  If I had to give an award for this match, it would go to Begoña for playing three matches.  She is also the most improved player from last year's team.  Way to go, Begoña.
In talking to some Memorial moms, I learned that the girls we played were the bottom half of their JV team!  Whew!  I would love to see their top half play!
Do I consider this loss a bad experience?  Absolutely not!  Our girls hung in there and never gave up!  Each of our girls played well and learned so much.  You get better by playing opponents who are more skilled and experienced than you.  Many games went to deuce and the final scores let us know some things that we need to work on!  We got better from playing the Memorial girls!
Many thanks to all our fans for coming out and to Begoña's family for providing great snacks!
