A Great Win to End a Winning Season

Marci Oesch Bahr
We love playing against John Cooper!
We love playing against John Cooper.  Their players are strong and always nice.  Last year, they narrowly beat us for the first time in my recollection, so we were out to reverse that trend and get back to our winning ways!
We've been working on court coverage and movement to the ball during practices.  At yesterday's practice, I asked Lini and Dalia to coach the other girls in singles.  I required them to give constructive feedback to the players after each game.  Hoping that hearing messages from peers would help, we played some intense matches.  (I also believe that when you watch and analyze a match, you can really benefit!) Today's matches proved the success of that practice!
John Cooper's girls were most comfortable playing doubles.  Lini and Sophia continued their partnership and easily won 6-1 against their opponents.  Similarly, Dalia and Begoña partnered to win against their opponents, also 6-1.  To stay consistent, Sophia and Dalia partnered for a second doubles match winning, you guessed it, 6-1.
John Cooper only had 3 girls who could be convinced to play singles.  Lini played Line 1 and had a FABULOUS match against a hard-hitting and consistent player.  The lead went back and forth until 6 all, pushing the match into a tie-breaker.  Again, the lead went back and forth... in the last points, the exchanges were LONG with each girl playing safe until the opportunity for a kill shot presented itself.  At 5 all in the tiebreaker, Lini asserted herself and forced her opponent to make 2 back-to-back errors, thus winning 7-5!  Well done, Lini, for staying positive and winning a very long and hard match against a very talented player!
Begoña played John Cooper's Line 2 singles player- a hard-hitting girl. Begoña is our 'most-improved' player over last year.  She has worked hard and is willing to try anything that we throw at her.  She got behind in this match but had a wonderful surge of energy and winning points...just not quite enough resulting in a 4-6 loss. Lauren played their Line 3 singles player.  Her opponent hit hard, low shots and then would draw Lauren in with a short ball.  On many occasions, Lauren's volley would put that short shot away.  On others, her opponent was able to lob over Lauren to win the point.  The score went back and forth and at 6 all, a tie-breaker was played with John Cooper with the win.  Sadly, Eva wasn't able to play today due to a sore knee.
I am very proud of all our girls this season!  They practiced hard, took coaching advice, and played positively and honestly throughout the season.  I have loved coaching them and look forward to our final event tomorrow, our Wooden and White- dressing in all white tennis clothes and playing with my vintage wooden rackets to honor the game of yesteryear and those who came before us!  JV Girls Tennis, 2024 season is in the books...and it was a great one!
